My students need a classroom garden to learn from, experiment with and possibly even eat from! A Kratky indoor garden is a perfect blend of STEM and Natural Sciences.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How do you teach environmental science in the middle of a dense urban landscape? Well, you can get out of town- or you can bring environmental science into your classroom. I teach a group of exceptional AP Environmental students in a high needs New York City Public school.
My AP Environmental class is a mix of students of abilities and ages.
My public school serves grades 6-12: 91% qualify for free lunch, 20% have learning disabilities and 90% of students at our school speak English as a second language. My advanced class is open to ALL high school students of ALL abilities- because I believe exposure to science, innovation, and nature are necessary to thrive in our changing environment and political climate.
My Project
These materials will be used as part of a STEM year-long project in my AP Environmental Science class. We live and work in a dense urban neighborhood- with no opportunity to make a garden out doors. So we are bringing it indoors!
Students will design, build and maintain hydroponic gardens in the classroom all year.
The AP Environmental Curriculum includes both city planning and agriculture. This project will allow students to explore urban gardening options and learn what exactly goes into the food we eat. Students will experiment with their systems and by the end of the year- have engineered a sustainable and fruitful garden.
There has been an interest for a garden club in our school for 2 years. I am also treating this as a pilot for a potentially larger project. If this is successful- I will be able to open this learning opportunity to the entire 6-12 school as a club.
