Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My student population is a diverse one, but all of my students have overcome obstacles and have made it to this school because they saw value in education as a means to succeed in life.
Our school, located in Brooklyn, NY, has high ratings for student achievement and prepares students for college and life beyond, but not because our students have it easy, most of my students in fact receive government assistance for school lunches.
We don't have a large budget as a school, and I do not feel comfortable burdening my students and their parents with having to buy many art supplies or fund the new art program I am starting.
Students who have overcome achievement gaps and statistics that cast negative shadows on their success, should be rewarded for their efforts and should have equal access to a great art education.
My Project
This year my students came in excited to create paintings and sculptures and not just draw, and I am excited to give them these opportunities. However, with so many students and a shoe string budget it is hard to gather enough materials for all.
These quality art materials, will give students the opportunity to advance their art making and allow them to explore the types of art they want to make, rather than the type we can afford.
With plaster we can make sculpture, with canvas we can make paintings, with rubber we can make prints, and with a computer we can research art and gather source images. With your help I can expose my students to new art forms and galvanize their life long interest in art.
