Building & Maintaining Strong Classroom Communities
I need books to grow our school's professional library as teachers strive to fully utilize morning meeting as a way to establish strong classroom communities.
Morning arrival at my school captures the positive energy the 350 students feel about coming to school each day. School is a safe, welcoming, and positive place. For many students, school is much more because it provides access to food, books, and/or community opportunities.
This historic, neighborhood school partners with many local groups to capitalize on providing all students engaging and high-quality experiences.
Our staff is committed and dedicated to thinking through what will make each child successful socially, emotionally, and academically.
My Project
This year our school's professional development plan focuses on culturally responsive teaching. As we start the year, our efforts are focused on the culturally responsive practice area of community building. While this professional development plan was in place before the tragic events in our community; now, the relevance of our professional development plan is even more significant for our entire school community.
Morning meeting is a practice that provides a safe, predictable, and engaging routine at the start of students' day.
It sets the stage for what will be learned that day while also providing students an opportunity to interact and share with one another. When implemented well, morning meeting sets a positive tone for the day and lets each student feel a sense of belonging.
While our students will not utilize these materials directly, my plan is to incorporate these in individual, team, and all staff professional development. It is important for teachers to keep morning meetings fresh, relevant, and connected to academics in order to be engaging for students. These books will also be part of our school-wide professional library so there is ample access to these titles.
