Our school represents a large variety of students from various countries all over the world. One hundred percent of the students at my school receive free or reduced price lunch and we are a schoolwide recipient of Title I funds.
One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing the change that my students undergo over the course of the year.
I am fortunate enough to see kids develop ways to express kindness each and everyday. They use manners that weren't present in August. I have seen students who loathe reading, turn into book lovers. A great part is hearing students say that math is their favorite subject because that was not true for me as a child. My classroom is full of faces and personalities that will impact our future world. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to do everything I can to make sure that impact will be a positive impact.
My Project
I have always taken a hundred photos (or more!) a week at school. I love documenting what we are doing and being able to give a keepsake photo to students for no special reason throughout the year. They love the photos and I have been told by parents that students still have these pictures in their room, on the fridge, etc. even up to 2 years later (and counting!). THAT is the lasting impact I am trying to achieve. Memories and lessons remembered years after they have exited my classroom doors for the year of academic gains.
I want to start using photos of students home life and school life to teach lessons of tolerance of others who are different than you may be.
I will use these frames to hang enlarged photo prints I take and frame around the room along side photos from their family from their lives outside of school. I have JUST THE SPOT I can't wait to fill with these frames right by our classroom door. I intend to use the poster frames to start the year with a class photo (ASAP depending on funding!), then add a 2nd one after Christmas. We have a semi-transient population so I look forward to having both these large, poster prints in our classroom. I absolutely CANNOT wait to be able to share the finished product with you: wonderful photos in these frames in our classroom that each tell a story of personal stories and tolerance of others. I have a camera (in another DonorsChoose project! :) ) to achieve high quality prints for our poster size class photo.
