Twenty-first century students need to be exposed to multiple perspectives and people of diverse backgrounds. There is a rich collection of cultures and customs that these students have likely never experienced. In a world which is becoming increasingly global in its relationships, young people have a need for materials that will help them experience and celebrate the differences that make each person unique.
Through this project, our class will receive a rich collection of classroom books and resources which will help us explore new cultures and points of view, widening our horizons!
My Project
While reading these books, students will step into the lives of diverse characters spanning time and geography! This guided tour of struggle and success is one that will stick with these young readers for a lifetime.
They will meet Malala Yousafzai, a courageous young girl in Pakistan who fights for the education of girls.
They will experience a Japanese internment camp in California with Fred Korematsu. They will read engaging biographies about female change-makers throughout history, they will stand on the auction block with eleven African American slaves, and they will wrestle with bias and stereotypes along with the Muslim character Amina.
These experiences and so many more await my students as they explore these books geared toward raising awareness of multiple perspectives and diverse human experience.
