My students are of various socioeconomic groups. They are various races, religions, and are all amazing. They work hard and are bright and funny. They are academically gifted high schools students. They live in a suburban area that was just affected by the floods.
My students work hard and are working hard to be successful in high school and after.
They long to gain knowledge and push themselves academically. My students love school and are involved in AP classes, extra curricular activities, and community service.
My Project
I will utilize these books for student close reading and for independent projects. Having spent a week studying Jazz and Civil Rights, I am working to bridge the refugee experience in relation to the slave/African American experience in Louisiana. Students will create a project to show understanding. We will also be talking to historians, scholars, and local musicians from the program who are giving their time free. These books would really provide background information and wide perspectives to this lesson. With these resources, we will have some starting points of research and some authors we can contact. Many of my students are personally connected to feeling unaccepted and want to learn about others overcoming this.
