I need books to develop more purposeful Restorative Practices in my school; books that will encourage and provide practical support to myself and other staff as we seek to transform our school community.
My students come to our alternative public school with a diverse set of needs: most struggle with the challenges of living in poverty, some are overcoming drug addiction, some are teen parents, some have language barriers, but all have high academic and social needs. I focus on meeting each student where they are and helping them identify and meet their academic and social-emotional goals.
One of my goals as an alternative teacher is to help restore students' trust with the school community after having experienced academic failure.
My classroom is a welcoming environment that serves all students in our school and where the focus remains on building relationships and restoring trust. It takes a lot of work to build the relationships necessary for our students and staff to address our students' academic and social-emotional challenges. The books I'm seeking with this project will help me extend "restorative practices" outside of my classroom and into my larger school community.
My Project
You must have a relationship in order to restore a relationship. These books and the "Table Talk" engagement tool will be the foundation of a Restorative Justice library in my school.
The principles and practices found in these books will aid in engagement with our students, families, and communities as we work to heal trust and build relationships which will contribute to student achievement.
The books in this small library give practical advice on how to build relationships between students, staff, and the larger community of stakeholders in our school. We will use what we draw from the expertise in these books to help our school address the behavioral and social-emotional needs of our high-risk student population as we seek to heal our community as a whole.
Our entire staff will have access to this library which is why I chose shorter books that include practical, focused information and books that explore the Restorative Justice model with greater depth. I also included a book on developing engaging partnerships with the families and other stakeholders represented in our school because that is so foundational to our success. Additionally, the "Table Talk" topics will help teachers engage in relationship building circles.
