Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Picture a group of kids who are growing up in the hotel next door. That's my room. As one of the few states that guarantee family housing, our shelters are overflowing. The state has purchased rooms in the hotels near our school, and well over half of our population is staying in a one room situation. They manage to be bright, funny, fun-loving, and really enjoy the safety and security school brings.
Our school is the Disney World of elementary schools; it not only keeps the kids safe, but it's a place where learning comes alive and is so fun!
My Project
Our project will begin in September and students will read The Red Pencil, a powerful story of one girl's triumphant journey, inspired by true tales of life in Sudan. We'll run a book club discussion. Talking about the poetry of the text, as well as the conditions of life in Sudan.
As a culminating experience, students will learn about ways to support refugees fleeing their home countries for safety in the US.
One such organization, the Welcome Home Northampton organization is helping to welcome and support 51 refugee families this year. Students will learn how to stamp bracelets and work to sell them as a fundraiser for this organization. All proceeds from their fundraiser will go directly to the Welcome Home Northampton group.
Sometimes, when we're little, the world, and the problems within can seem so large, how do hope to impact the world? Sometimes it's just a red pencil, or a bracelet, that will change no just the lives of who we donate to, but the lives of my students creating the project. “There is no power greater than a community discovering what it cares about. -MARGARET WHEATLEY
