NRMS is a rural school, located on Cape Cod. Our local area is supported by eco tourism, artists, and small businesses. One of our educational goals is to develop students that have the necessary skills and a personal commitment to sustain our community. Hands-on learning is an intrinsic part of our community, so to support this learning style, we have used community support to build The Nauset Greenhouse, an Outdoor Learning Lab, an after-school MakerSpace, and large arts program where students and community members work together actively participating in solving world problems.
My Project
We will use the Makey Makeys and the heat vinyl supplies as part of our Unity day activities. My students know that we are all different, but they do not always recognize that things that say and do online for "fun" can really hurt their school mates. For this activity we will be using Makey Makeys to create an old school Operation Game with a new twist. Instead of taking out broken bones and damaged organs from a patient, we will create a social media game where we take out the harmful activities kids use to hurt each other.
Much of the hate and intolerance we see comes through computers, so we want to teach students how to use computer science to beat online cruelty.
We have built an Operation Game using the computer program Scratch, and will share our code in the updates once the project is funded.
Our Tech Engineering class will build an interactive game that can hang on the wall. The hand tools, colored ink, and vinyl cutting supplies will be used to take their card board prototypes into a professional looking board game from wood.
We would like to help other schools replicate this program because students need to learn how to use the computer for positive social change instead of as a way to spread intolerance, so we plan to share a link to the plans for this portion of our project as well.
