Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students love art, but rarely get a chance to create it!
We are a high-poverty high school located in an undeserved neighborhood near downtown LA.
Despite the challenges that our kids face, we have a great group of students who are engaged in their classes, and motivated to go to college.
We have a very high graduation and college acceptance rate. Our students love any opportunity to create and express themselves, and they are very engaged by creative problem solving, imaginative thinking, and art making. Our school is small, and only has one art teacher.
My Project
American Visual Culture bombards young people with stereotypical images of different genders, races, and nationalities.
How can we raise our students critical consciousness about our media, thereby inoculating them againt these stereotypes and permitting them to develop an authentic appreciation of an individuals identity?
Through media analysis, students will encounter and discuss the ways our culture reinforces it's expectations about gender roles, sexuality, race, beauty, and societal values.
Students will appropriate familiar images from our media, and create artworks which remix those images in order to communicate a critical message about the values and expectations of American Visual Culture. Students will write evidence-based artist statements about their work, and present these pieces to the school community through an art exhibition.
