My students need 1 LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit as more kids wanted to join us, and several instructional books to help us "newbies" learn to design, program, and operate robots to the best of our abilities!
My students are a wonderful group of amazing kids who have goals and aspirations just like many children. However, many struggle with the barriers of poverty, language acquisition, special needs and both parents working very long hours. Some of our children have emotional needs and are living in homeless shelter motels that have recently opened in our area.
My high-poverty students strive to succeed, but are limited by the lack of resources available in our small public school environment.
We're trying hard to change that dynamic! Many of my students dream of becoming science and technology leaders. I endeavor to support their dreams to the best of my abilities. My kids are the hardest working group of individuals I've been given the joy of educating!
My Project
Our new journey into the exciting and challenging world of LEGO Mindstorms robotics has just begun! It is beyond thrilling to be a part of FIRST LEGO League! What we have learned so far is that more kids are extremely interested in being part of the action than we had originally thought. To keep this motivation alive and thriving, we need one more kit. We don't want to turn anyone away due to lack of materials. No child should be left out of this awesome academic endeavor.
We have also learned that we need a little support in the form of instructional resources that teach step by step processes and have a plethora of visuals!
We found out the hard way that we should have studied some manuals to assist us in learning this challenging program. Our skills in Science, Math and Technology are excellent. However, we could seriously use some guidance materials. These will be used to assist us as we try our hands and minds on applying these skills within the coding format. There is no lack of determination or enthusiasm for my students' desire to achieve this goal. Our after school program has never been this crowded. It is directly attributable to this inspiring program.
