This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every day in my science class, my goal is to inspire a child. I teach a diverse population of students with more than seven languages spoken in my classroom. No matter what language they speak or the culture they live, in my room we speak and live the language of science. Science can be a difficult subject to grasp when for many of my students this is their first science class in years!
My plan is to engage and expand my learning territory beyond the classroom and into their homes, lives, and heart.
I want them to enjoy school and learning. In order to reach my students, I must have multiple avenues and hands-on ways to teach them science standards. I enjoy teaching and I enjoy learning from my students, but it becomes increasingly hard with limited supplies and no money to purchase materials.
My Project
We are about to embark on our journey into meteorology! We will begin our investigation into weather and climate. My students will need calculators, paper and colored pencils to create colorful landscapes of different weather events and climates from around the world. They will also need an Amazon Echo device to give them current weather data and facts from their chosen location.
My junior meteorologists will choose a city from around the world and track the weather of that city for a week.
The data collected will then be used to plot the temperature and rainfall amounts on a line graph using graph paper. Students will then have to create a piece of artwork that appropriately identifies a particular region's climate such as desert, tropical, tundra and ect.
My students will become meteorologists as they learn about weather and the conditions that create it. Calculators will be needed to calculate the average temperatures and rainfall of specific areas. Lastly, my students will present the information collected on small poster to the class and their parents.
