Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

About My Students

My students are mostly minority students with a high poverty background. They are interested in coming to school and learning science. They enjoy learning chemistry concepts by programming results from experiments and incorporating them into their learning process. They also enjoy drawing pictures to interpret their understanding of the chemistry concept.

Most of my students come to chemistry class each day, learning a bunch of information, and are not quite sure where it fits in past high school. Of course, they are all aware of the fact that they can be a chemistry teacher, but what else is there really?

Our project would require students to use papers, glue stick, poster boards and teacher tote. They will go out there in the community in organized groups after school and during the weekends and talk to professionals. Find out what kinds of profession chemistry relates to. They would get as much information from different professionals like pharmacists, medical doctors, biochemists and forensic scientists. Then they would decide which one of those professions inspires them the most.

They would then conduct further online research on the profession that they have chosen. Then, they will create a poster that contains specific items detailed about their job of interest. They will be graded based on completeness, creativeness, and ability to express an understanding of the job title.

In Their Own Words

Mai: The goal of this project is to help us improve our public relations, collaboration skills and also expose us to the importance of chemistry in our world. We will be able to interview different professionals whose jobs are related to chemistry. They will be able to help us in making career decisions.

We cannot wait to go out there talking to professionals and carrying our materials in a teacher tote!

James: Chemistry is the study of matter and the chemical reactions between substances. Chemistry is also the study of matter's composition, structure, and properties. Matter is essentially anything in the world that takes up space and has mass.

It would be very interesting to go out there and find out the kind of jobs that relates to chemistry.

If we are fortunate to have our project funded, we will distribute the poster boards, papers and glue sticks to our classmates. Then, divide students into groups based on proximity to their homes. We will also make sure that every student understands the safety requirement and the project requirements.

After everyone has completed the project, we will use a rubric to evaluate everyone's work during presentations and have the best projects displayed on the walls.

Mary: This project is important to us because it would expose us to the different careers out there that chemistry relates to. We need a teacher tote to carry our materials, papers, glue sticks and poster boards to conduct a face to face interview and online research on a particular job description; We would create a poster that contains the job title, specific items detailed about the job. We would get a photograph that represents the job, we will also find out how chemistry specifically relates to the job, how the job affects our lives and the steps in acquiring the job.

All our information will be displayed on a poster board using papers and glue sticks. Every student would present their projects to the class. We will also need an SAT Premier 2017 with 5 Practice Tests Book to study and prepare for college so that we can be on the right track to realizing our goals.
