Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are newcomers to our urban core high school, immigrating from Cambodia, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, and Nicaragua. Many of them have been in the USA less than six months, often sent here to join distant or estranged family members or acquaintances, many of whom are unfamiliar with the tutelage and needs of teenaged children. In particular, they often are unable to meet the nutritional requirements of these adolescents, who come to school famished. I want my kids to feel welcome, to feel they are in a safe place, to feel at home. This is not easy given the pervasive anti-immigrant sentiment. And it really is all up to me--and you. Due to budgetary constraints, newcomer centers in our school district have been eliminated, as have weekly counseling sessions with a psychologist specializing in the problems of immigrant children. My kids are lonely, lost, frightened, and hungry. This last point is probably the easiest one to solve, and one that connects to all the others.
Indeed, one of the best ways to connect to children or anyone is through food.
My Project
Will these kids make the summit--the pinnacle of honor roll? Will they hit the peak experience of acquiring knowledge for its own sake? Or will their focus wilt for lack of nutrition? Healthy snacks can give kids an additional reason to make it to the top.
Belay us, people: my students come to class every day asking me, "Maestro, tengo mucho hambre!" I do what I can, but with 140 students a day, I can't really tide them over until lunch.
Clif bars are excellent nutrition, without the excess sugars, fats, or chemicals that lead to abysmal nutrition and obesity, and they offer two added bonuses: first, they'll help kids acquire a taste for healthy, organic snacks, and second, because they are not too sweet, and something of an acquired taste, most kids will not overindulge.
I'd really like to do more, but this is a good place to start our ascent.
