Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 500 hundred students ranging from Kindergarten through 5th grade. It is a very high needs school with 100% of the students qualifying for free lunch and breakfast.
Although much of the school's population faces challenges of poverty, homelessness or single parent households, it is home to many eager and determined children that have a love for learning and growing.
Their determination and joy for life amazes me daily! I hope that with the proper supports in place, our students can prosper throughout their educational journey.
My Project
A large majority of our students do not have access to hygiene products or consistent food at home. With a lack of resources, these children often come to school hungry or self-conscious which in turn makes it very difficult for individual learning to emerge.
All children deserve to be fed and to feel comfortable inside their classroom, that is why one of my goals this year as a school counselor is to create an accessible school resource pantry for our students.
This pantry will contain take-home snacks that can be carried in a backpack and easily prepared at home. It will also provide hygiene kits for personal care. When students are able to come to school prepared, their ability to concentrate and overall learning experience will improve. They can start their day off with a positive platform and focus purely on learning.
This is a project in the making that is far from completion, but when finished, this pantry will act as an amazing resource for our students!
