Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are capable of changing the world. I am a high school Special Education English teacher. I work at a high diversity, low income rural high school serving more than two thousand students. More than 60% of my students are minorities, and and more than 70% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students are readers, writers, dreamers, believers, and achievers.
Too many of my bright students are reluctant students.
Their reluctance, however, is less of a choice and more of a condition of their severe discrepancies and learning disabilities. The majority of my students read between the 4th and 8th grade levels and write between the 2nd and 7th grade levels. Their discrepancies do not define them, nor do they determine them. My students are itching to learn, but the current climate of public schools is not always conducive to their individual needs.
My Project
We are in desperate need of quality literature novel sets to engage in novel studies in my classroom.My students would greatly benefit from this set of TOON prize-winning graphic novels designed for middle-grade readers to improve reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. We require quality literature to help students raise their reading and writing skills to grade level standards.
Graphic novels emphasizing Greek mythology, fantasy, adventure, and fairy tales grab reluctant readers who tire from reading traditional fiction and non-fiction.
With a class set of these high-interest graphic novels, we can read with visually stunning images that are not only age-appropriate, but at their individualized reading levels to hook students on reading and foster self-confidence! They will be exited to come into class and read these books!
