Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds. All are immigrants and newcomers to the U.S who are learning a new language and a new culture. Our school is a low income, urban public high school in Chicago, Illinois. We have one of the highest refugee student populations in the nation.
My students and their families struggle on a daily basis because they lack essential items such as food, clothing and personal hygiene necessities.
Coming to school without having the necessities to clean themselves, without seasonal clothing, and without having a nutritional meal, is something my students deal with all year long. As teenagers, it is very hard to fit in with peers. This challenge is especially daunting for immigrant and refugee students. They to must adapt to the different standards of dress and hygiene, as well as learn a new language. Basic items will help them adjust and thrive in school.
My Project
Being uprooted to a new country as a teenager isn't easy. There are many adjustment that must be handled each and every day. These teens are not only adjusting to the normal body changes of young adulthood, but also adapting to cultural changes. Meeting the hygiene standards and norms of the American culture can often present obstacles for those with severely limited resources.
As these immigrant and refugee teens struggle to fit into a new American culture, access to basic hygiene items is essential to meeting the health and grooming standards of their new culture.
By simply having basic sanitary and grooming items in hand, these students can arrive at school prepared to take on the other challenges of learning a new language and developing relationships with their peers.
