Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 8th grade students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun.

Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood in Northern California.

About 60 percent of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and more than a majority of them speak English as a second language.

Although these teens possess many amazing gifts, many of them have enormous hardships to deal with in their lives. They are Bulldogs in name as well as spirit, however: They persevere in the face of these adversities and will triumph over them!

My Project

My middle school journalism class is a one semester course where students learn about evaluating the media for bias, conducting interviews, writing reports, and becoming media literate. It can be tough, however, to engage middle school students in the draft-revise-edit-publish cycle of written news, especially with the deadlines and long lead times involved with printed copy. Students are far more interested in creating video news and blogging, which can be more accessible and current. We have tried using our Chromebook cameras to create our reports, but the resulting videos have been grainy, shaky, and hard to hear. As a result, our videos aren't quite up to snuff. We are asking for a backdrop and lights, bar-height stools, a clapboard, and press badge holders to help us put together a well-lit "set" in our classroom and support our young journalists. The lights would help our videos look better, and students would have a lot of fun learning how to use the green screen background. This project will help us create our in-class "set." (We will still need to get a microphone, tripod, and a camera with another project )

Journalism at the middle school level is not every student's dream class when all you have is a newsletter that comes out a few times per semester.

Video journalism, however, is something that would attract many more students to our journalism program and help them become more media savvy!
