Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of teaching all of the students in the building. I get to know them on a personal level. I also have to be strong, because in this city school district, I hear many heartbreaking stories. They have tough lives with a lot of gang activity, drug use, and family issues. I open up my classroom to many of the community organizations, so our students have somewhere else to go. I also open my classroom door to all of my students at any time, for anything. I try to introduce them to healthier lifestyle choices any way I can.
My Project
Our female students are in desperate need of tampons and pads for their monthly mentrual cycle. Since I am the Health teacher, I am asked almost everyday by my female students for a pad or a tampon. I keep extra supplies for my students because they are almost never prepared for that moment! I have visits from former students because they know I have them ready. They cannot use the limited amount provided by the district because they are given pads that have lost the adhesive and can be compared to diapers.
