Growing up in a small, rural community can sometimes limit one's experiences. Books allow students to move beyond these limitations and see the world. The students in my 10th grade English class will not be limited by circumstance. They want to learn about the world outside them. My students recognize that it is important for everyone's voice to be heard.
My students have been labeled as "special", "limited", "apathetic" and "at-risk".
They are so much more than a label. They are caring, kind, and inquisitive. They are hungry to learn. Although there is not much diversity in our school, there is in our class. We have a variety of races, languages, and religions. We all agree that we need to read about each other's experiences, as it will bring us together.
My Project
“We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race." --Kofi Annan
Multicultural books allow students to imagine life from a different perspective.
They teach us that, despite the diversity, human emotions are the same everywhere. They also help dispel myths and stereotypes about different cultures, while teaching tolerance and respect.
Enrique's Journey, by journalist Sonia Nazario, will allow my students to learn about the many children who migrate through Mexico to come to the United States on the tops of trains. This book will foster discussions on culture, immigration, and the universal desire for a better life.
