Our school is a Title I public school in Florida with approximately one thousand four hundred thirty-three students.
When I first stepped foot into my classroom I had no idea the type of students I'd encounter.
I'd been told that it would be challenging and lots of hard work. What I found when I got there were eager 6th graders striving to become better students and overall better citizens within their community. Most of my students have only known this small, agricultural town and see themselves one day raising their own families there. The community is very close-knit and some of the friendliest people I have ever met.
My students come to school daily with the intention to make their teachers happy. It's exciting to see them master content that they initially struggled with. It's their desire to be better than they were the day before that inspires me to be the best possible teacher I can be.
Many of my students have a desire to read but find it challenging. It became my mission to find grade appropriate reading that even my most reluctant readers would enjoy: graphic novels and comic books. As I began to add these titles to the classroom library, students couldn't wait to finish assignments to read them. Many have asked for the sequels or other books like them. I have also noticed since adding these resources the students gained more confidence in progressing to more challenging texts.
This project will allow me to add more of these graphic novels to my library to keep up with the growing demand.
