Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our charter school's mission is to prepare economically disadvantaged students for college, career, and life through rigorous academics and setting high expectations. Parents choose to send their children to our school because we provide a free alternative that meets all the diverse needs of individual students.
In my position as a math interventionist, I support our most at-risk students through research-based math experiences that fill gaps, address misconceptions, and prepare students to succeed in the classroom and life.
Each of my small groups becomes a tight-knit team, with their own unique name, mural, and handshake. We build one another up, accept inevitable mistakes, and persevere even with things get tough! I strive to cultivate a love of math and a confidence to tackle any problem!
My Project
Many students come to school with a negative connotation about math. They think, "I'm bad at math" or "Math is boring." My goal is to help change that attitude into one of confidence and eagerness to learn more.
This project will cover the cost of registration for Dr. Nicki Newton's Guided Math Bootcamp.
This intensive workshop will help me learn how to launch, implement or advance Guided Math, a student-centered math model. When I return to school, I will immediately use this essential knowledge to teach my students in the most engaging, effective way and also train our other math teachers to use these best practices in their classrooms.
The knowledge gleaned from this training will improve math instruction for over 135 students! I am so excited for the difference we will be able to make in the lives of these students by enriching our math instruction to best meet all students' needs. I know they will be more engaged, motivated, and driven to succeed in a math classroom that is run with these best practices.
All current math teachers at our school have begun to implement this model, but have a lot of room for growth. I know this training could provide the inspiration and tools to make that growth a reality!
