Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My school is a Title I school with 99% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. I am an autism teacher and my students are amazing! Each is only three or four years old, but brilliant in his or her own right. Some are very vocal and receive time in the general education classroom. One has gone from saying three words at the beginning of last school year to speaking in complete sentences. Others are learning to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to express their needs. I love the way my students work together in our play center, and I am proud of the way they have welcomed new students into our class!

My Project

One of my students loves dolphins! His love for dolphins quickly spread to the rest of the class and the Dolphin book became a daily favorite during story time.

I nurtured my students’ interests by introducing new books about dolphins and other sea animals.

Given their excitement for books about sea animals, imagine how these young learners will feel seeing fish, frogs and dolphins in person!

Donations to this project will fund 10 student tickets and 17 adult tickets to the National Aquarium in Baltimore so all preschool and pre-kindergarten students at my school can visit the aquarium. Our prior project covered the cost of the other students in our program, so we just need the cost of a few more students and their chaparones!

This trip is important because children with autism often struggle with making connections between classroom learning and outside experiences. Visiting the National Aquarium as a field trip will help students make real world connections to the animals they see in books, online and on TV with the support of teachers and parents. It will also show students how pollution and trash affect the water animals live in.

Many of my students’ parents have expressed thanks for school field trips because of this additional adult support. In addition to the academic benefits of field trips, these learning experiences allow my students to engage positively with their peers and build shared experiences. I am hoping to make this an annual field trip in order to continuously engage students and parents in experiential learning.
