Making Mathematicians Matter

My students need a good set of sturdy tools ( ruler, protractor and Compass) so they can work, explore, learn, and grow at school AND at home.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

High school can be tough. Attending a high school in a new country where you don't speak the language can be tougher. Throw in the fact that many of my students are from low SES homes - nearly all participate in the free/reduced lunch program - and so can't always afford to buy a set of math tools for home learning and exploration, and school can seem almost impossible.

But despite all of that, my students are budding mathematicians with a penchant for learning, but a limited budget for good-quality materials.

They show up every day, with eager, open minds, curious about the geometric relationships that exist in the world. They just need the tools to help make that possible.

My Project

Tenth grade geometry is all based on geometric constructions and finding relationships among, and between, them. Much of this course requires students to use the appropriate tools to make various constructions, analyze/understand them, make connections, and prove them. Precision and attention-to-detail are required to construct things such as angle bisectors, perpendicular bisectors, to copy angles and triangles, as well as to locate points of concurrency. This process becomes extremely difficult when the tools at my (and so their) disposal are not suitable for accurate, precise work. The materials I have requested are sturdy and precise, and so will allow my students a better opportunity to see the geometric relationships in the constructions that are part of the curriculum. The reason for the number of each material is to allow each student the ability to take the tools home to practice outside of the classroom, as well. Since I work in a high-poverty school, most students' parents cannot afford to purchase geometry supplies of this quality -- especially for just one course. My hope is to have a large enough class set that will stand up to regular use, year after year, giving many more students the opportunity to explore the exciting world of geometry.

My students will use the compasses, rulers, and protractors every day to complete precise geometric constructions that will help them to make real-world connections and develop their critical thinking.

While in-class work is essential for setting the foundations of understanding, home learning is crucial for reinforcing concepts on a long-term basis and building upon those foundations created in the classroom. Having a set of geometric tools to take home will allow my students the much-needed opportunity to practice what they've learned, and maybe, just maybe, show someone at home how far they are progressing.
