My students need stethoscopes and blood pressure monitors to collect health data and to engage them in the study of the cardiovascular system.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students enjoy learning about the cardiovascular system. Learning about the human heart and how it works is especially interesting to them. I want them to be able to demonstrate a competence in the correct and responsible usage of the stethoscope and take blood pressure readings from a human subject (classmate).
Equipment for hands on learning is the foremost way to achieve this. My students are curious, intelligent and passionate individuals who are looking for a challenge.
We are a Title 1 school, low income demographic, 85% free lunch, with a lot of ethnic diversity. My students are great individuals and will make positive change in their communities.
My Project
There is a lot of interest by students at our school for classes that introduce them to careers in the medical field. Many students could then continue from high school to college programs that will prepare the to become the health professionals of the future. We can equip and empower these students to go into higher education in the sciences and/or medical fields.
My students will be able to engage in hands on structured lab activities with these products.
The students will demonstrate a competence in the correct and responsible usage of the stethoscope and take blood pressure readings from a human subject (classmate and/or themselves). Students will then compare this blood pressure reading to what is considered a normal reading. They will learn the benefits of healthy heart rates and blood pressure along with how to test them.
Students in general learn when they are more engaged and especially when they are able to be hands on. I teach 5 anatomy/physiology classes (maybe 6 classes this years due to budget cuts) with 30 students in each course. My priority is to welcome and engage all my students in the awe inspiring study of the human body. By equipping the students with a blood pressure monitor and stethoscope, they can learn how to collect their health data.

The American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2012 stated "Younger people with high blood pressure are 28 percent less likely to be diagnosed with the condition than older people".
