Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students who will benefit from this project are refugees and immigrants from over fifty countries around the world. The countries include Iran, Iraq, Nepal, Congo, Somalia, and Tanzania. They are experiencing their first year in America and come to our school to learn English.
These are resilient refugee students who have left their native country and often their family to seek a better life in America.
They appreciate this opportunity and are hardworking and gracious additions to our own culture.
My Project
These African drums will help students as they transition into American culture. Many students have played the drums in their native countries and had to leave them behind when they came to America. Drums can help ease the homesickness and let students communicate without words. This is especially important since the students know no English when they arrive.
The djembes and drums will be used to in a drum circle which will allow refugee students to participate in a familiar cultural activity as a form of communication as they learn the English language through rhythms and rhyme.
