THIRSTING for BOOKS! I am moving to a new grade, 3rd, and in need of novels for this level of reading. I love to teach and the students love to learn the reading strategies through novels. Class sets enable it so that each student has their own copy to follow and participate with. Class and group discussions become more meaningful which helps to increase fluency and comprehension. These books will be shared among the different third grades.
3rd grade is an age where students develop a love for reading and are THIRSTING for BOOKS.
We live in an era where students love technology, but let us not forget to help develop the love of books too.
Our school is in a very rural community in Southern Utah. There will be about 60 eager to learn third graders. The students appreciate the outdoors. They know how to work hard physically, because of farming, as well as mentally. The students come from different social backgrounds.
My Project
Reading is the most important thing we as teachers can teach our students. Students have to be able to, not only understand what they read, but to read text smoothly. We will use these classroom sets of books to help the students become more fluent readers while learning to love to read. We will be using these books in literacy circles and whole class reading. There will be one book for each month of the school year. The books are different genres to help teach different comprehension strategies. Most of the titles are the start of a series to encourage students to read the others on their own.
Reading is the most important skill, that we as teachers, can teach our students.
