Nature is something that my students are not exposed to daily and my goal is to change that. I want them to see nature as a thing of beauty and as something that they love and respect.
My students are in kindergarten and first grade have a classification of "autism." These students love when they have visuals and enjoy hands on activities.
Thankfully I am at a school that fosters their curiosity and allows for me to bring many things into the classroom that help them to better understand the concepts presented.
My Project
With the gardening book and the hydroponic system that I am requesting my students will be able to experience so many new things. First they will be able to be exposed to nature and plants which they rarely see in their neighborhood. With the exposure to nature they will learn to love nature and will be better at protecting it as they get older. The hydroponic system will also allow for my students to get a first hand view of the growth process that takes place in plants which will help with our plant and animal studies that we do as part of the curriculum. Lastly the hydroponic system will let my students have access to a garden indoors since we do not have outdoor gardening space. They will be able to grow a variety of plants and will be able to use their plants in a variety of ways, measurement, light exposure experiments, grow medium experiments, taste tests, and graphing with many factors including color, measurement and if they like or dislike the taste.
The hydroponic garden system will allow for my students to gain an appreciation for nature which is allows them to be proactive in other initiatives with recycling and zero waste that are being promoted in my classroom on a daily basis.
The students will also be able to use the hydroponic garden system to help them in their art skills by drawing the plants and doing leaf rubbings. By "Empowering Students Through Art" not only are we building my students to be scientist but also artists.
