Imagine young people who are given the opportunity to make a difference in the very community in which they live. To make changes and enhance the quality of the lives among their families, friends and neighbors. To feel empowered as change agents and ambassadors for their futures.
Our 6th graders are the leaders in our building in every way.
It is their rite of passage to mentor the rest of our school from kindergarten on up, to serve. They take this quite seriously. They want to do their best because they know they will be sharing their experiences, their thoughts, their ideas with the whole school and beyond. These are hard workers. Pride bearers. Lovers of fun...and dancing. Now they want to expand this leadership to our community. They believe their hard work and passion for a healthy environment will influence the choices made by stakeholders in our neighborhoods
My Project
Our students are difference makers. We start our year together by finding a way to reach out to our community as servant leaders. This year we have asked our township supervisor if there was a problem we could help him solve. He smiled and his eyes twinkled with a challenge. "How would you like to help us make our favorite summer swimming lake safe to swim in?" This lake is a popular spot for families during the summer months. However, over the past few years, the bacteria that has been found there has become too dangerous to allow swimming. Our students have taken up the challenge. We have had guest speakers and have Skyped with college students who are experts and are researching this very thing. We have completed research ourselves and have been practicing data collection and are now ready to "test the waters." The resources we are asking for will enable us to do just that. It will be an amazing accomplishment for our kids to find a solution to this problem and share it!
Donations to our project will better prepare our students for solving real-world problems and issues while teaching them what they need to know to succeed in school right now.
Our students will use multiple learning techniques, including research, logical deduction, data collection, and iterative learning. This project will not only change our community but will empower our kids for future difference making. They will always remember how their hard work changed our community for the better!
