Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Alex, Alexis, Brandon, Abigail, Hitzy, Andrea, Esmerelda, and Jennifer are an amazing group of young leaders that are working to help those youth that are impacted by human trafficking. They are extending a helping hand to try and help girls recover once they have been freed from trafficking.

This project came out of my students being involved in their community all year and becoming more aware of the needs of teens that are on the outside of society. My students have become more empathetic to others and their desire to help the most vulnerable in our city inspires all that encounter our class. The students wanted to help this specific group of teens because they felt, as a whole, teens that are being uplifted out of a trafficking situation literally had nothing positive in their life at that moment. The students wanted to help make the transition as seamless as possible back into normal society, and to let these teens know that they have been seen, heard and cared about. I cannot think of a better life lesson than that for our youth today.

My students will learn the limitations of local government and the role of the active citizens in their community. They have done research to find local agencies that deal with human trafficking and also what the current laws cover. The students will use teamwork to put together the bags and empathy to create notes of encouragement to for those that will be receiving them. This is what real life learning looks like and hopefully we are helping these students to learn how to be actively engaged in their community.

In Their Own Words

In our work with our community we uncovered a problem that we did not know existed for teens in our area, that problem is human trafficking. For this project we wanted to create and deliver care bags to girls who have been the victims of human trafficking and are trying to rebuild their lives. We are teaming up with local shelters to encourage the girls to keep fighting for their lives and to reassure them that there are people supporting them every step of the way.

I plan to lead this project by encouraging my group every day to find new resources we can use in our community to help this group of surviving young women. I will try to find good local contacts to make sure that the help is getting directly to the young women and to find out what else is needed in the recovery process. I will lead by example and work as hard as I can to make this project a success.

This project is important to me and my community because as we get more involved in our city, it becomes apparent as to how hard it is to grow up as a young person on the outside of mainstream society. We want to show empathy to these young ladies and to help them to recover from the ordeal of being freed from human trafficking. We would like to shine a light on this darker side of our community and help to solve this problem.
