About My Students

These 7 students are wonderful and hardworking! In addition to designing the student lounge, they are members of the yearbook staff, play in school sports, choir members, and are honor students. These students collaborated for weeks using Google Drawings and Docs to develop this lounge idea.

The students were presented with this lounge by our school dean. The lounge would be a place for students who earned the privilege of using the lounge during their lunch period. The lounge would have fun activities for students to play, be active, and communicate with their fellow students while eating lunch. The students worked independently to develop a budget for their idea of a perfect lounge using Amazon, Google Docs, and Google Drawings. Then they worked together as a group of 7 to combine their ideas to make one class lounge. After joining together and combining their ideas the students were asked to present the idea to the principal, vice principal, and the rest of the school's administrators. They worked together once again to create a Prezi. The students then presented their individual work and combined ideas to the administrative team.

The students developed both mathematically and writing skills during this project. They were required to stay within a certain budget. They could not go over the given budget and had to make sure their items' area was not greater than the room's area. They developed technical writing skills by having to write about their ideas and their budgets. The students learned many much needed real-life skills. They needed to work together efficiently to meet each deadline and had to collaborate effectively to meet the deadlines on time. They become proficient with 21st Century technology skills by using Google Drawings and Google Docs to create their individual and group lounges. They also learned how to navigate and create an interesting presentation using the Prezi software.

In Their Own Words

The Student Lounge is a place for my fellow students and me to hang out during our lunch period and be active in our learning environment. The idea for the room is that when you got chosen (because you have been making good choices) you and 2-3 friends would be able to hang out and and have fun. We could play board games, Foosball, and Just Dance or Mario Cart. It is important to me and my friends because we want to have an area where we can have fun in a safe environment.

I will be a leader because I made decisions with my classmates based on what I think is the best for my fellow students. We independently designed a room and made a budget for all the things we wanted in the room. We discussed our designs and who should use it. We showed our ideas to each other and came to a conclusion on the final design of the room. We then presented our ideas to the school administrators. We want this room because it is a place for us to be with our friends.

The room is a place for students to earn the privilege of using it during their lunch. The students will earn this chance by doing their homework, coming to school, and not getting in trouble. This will help the problem of students being antsy and talkative during learning time. In the lounge the students will play board games, Just Dance or Mario Cart on the Wii, or talk with friends over a game of Foosball. This allows us to communicate with each other beyond just text messaging!
