Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What was your dream during high school? Most teens dream of being out on their own. This is also the dream of my students, but they have some extra obstacles to overcome due to their special needs. With this project, we can make their dream a reality by helping them with financial literacy.

My classroom is filled with students who love to learn.

Some have limited vocabulary and benefit from visual prompts. They are kinesthetic learners who benefit from hands-on activities and love to create! My students lack organizational skills and require much help and prompting. My students are students with autism, emotional/behavior disorders, learning disabilities, mild/ moderate MI, and many have multiple diagnoses. They are functioning on a kindergarten to fourth grade reading, math, and for most of them, social levels. We are located in a rural area in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. Most children come from a low socioeconomic background.

My Project

We are requesting Living on Your Own simulation, check books, file folders, and pocket charts. My students would be able to experience what it is like "Living on their own" with the simulation text. With the check books, they would have them in their hands and be able to write checks using something very similar to what they will use as adults. The file folders and pocket charts will be used to throw surprises their way. They could receive a bonus at work or get a flat tire, we will create the surprise cards. There will be weekly grocery bills, utility bills, rent, and pay checks that the students will have to keep track of. Students will have to make a decision of having a vehicle or taking public transportation. They will have to weigh the pros and cons of having a roommate. They will learn the difference between wants and needs. We will adapt and add to the Living On Your Own simulation to cover the needs of my students. We will use the Checking text to practice writing checks correctly. They will learn the importance of keeping track of their accounts and how to budget.

This project will help my students gain independence by helping them understand what happens when they "grow up and move out".

For them to be able to experience living on their own in a controlled environment, they will be able to make mistakes and learn from them without the fear of being put out on the streets. This is very real for my students due to their disabilities. They will be able to practice how they want to live and ask questions. They will learn more from the hands on experience.
