My students enjoy hands on activities and stay physically active much of the time. They have a difficult time focusing on activities such as writing and reading that require concentration and focus.
My students are from a low sociol-economic area of our state and many have working parents that aren't often home.
They are gifted and talented students that face many hurdles in life. They strive to learn, some despite difficult situations, and continue to want to learn. These students want to be successful and can be if given the appropriate tools to do so.
My Project
In the classroom, students will use the stability balls as chairs. Research says that this will allow the students to better concentrate because they have to stay focused to keep the ball from rolling away. The students will be taught how to use the balls correctly and how to keep them in good shape.
Following these lessons, the students will have to earn the right to sit on a ball in the classroom. They will be allowed to bounce slightly on the balls when they are at their seat to harness the energy they struggle to contain. The students will be able to sit on their ball each day to help them keep this focus.
The balls will help my active students maintain focus in the classroom during the quiet, calm activities that are required today in school.
Research shows that these activities create higher brain function which will give my students the motivation and ability to work through more difficult tasks.
