I teach at a small rural high school in North Carolina. Twenty-eight percent of the students are on free and reduced lunch. The project will impact the tenth grade honors biology course offered at the school. The course covers various topics in relation to human health. Recently the class went on a field trip to view the Human Body Worlds exhibit. Following the trip the class began a project to study how human health is impacted by nature and genetics. Part of the project involves reading the book "The Demon In The Freezer." There are currently 60-70 students per semester enrolled in honors biology. The school does not have the budget to provide every student with a copy of the book. My goal is to obtain a class set of the books to rotate between the classes. In order to fulfill the goal of the project students will need a copy of the book to read. The knowledge that students will gain from reading the book includes distinguishing viral particles from bacterium, detailing the symptoms of a viral disease, and learning how nature affects different organisms. Again, part of the overall goal for biology is to give students a better understanding of human health. Reading "The Demon In The Freezer" will help fulfill this goal.
