In Kindergarten, students are discovering the world around them through all their senses. This project will give them the opportunity to continue doing what they know and enhance their learning experience. Students are still developing language skills and interaction within their class community. This is the foundation for the larger community. Students will learn to work together in order to successfully perform their community project. They will interact with their fellow students as a community member. This will help them learn classroom skills that can be transformed into the community. It is important for students to be able to make a connection from the classroom to the community. In order to understand the different roles community members play in our community, they need to be able to have a chance to role play these professions. The project that is being proposed, addresses the need for the students to be able to have a chance to role play a variety of community members. It will give Kindergartners a chance to use their imagination and learn at the same time. Kindergarten is a time for exploration about the community around them. This project will give students a chance to see what roles the community members play across the curriculum. This is not just an important subject for social studies, but also, math, science and especially literature. Community members are found in all subjects and all types. Through this project students will have hands on activities to participate in to show and explore how the community works. The goal of this project is for Kindergartners to build a solid foundation and understanding of the community. They need to be able to identify types of occupations/services and describe their importance in the community. Throughout this project students will explore different members of the community and understand their important roles and how the community could not function without them. They will also be given an opportunity to set goals for their lives and work to achieve them by having a strong foundation and awareness of the various important members that make up or community. Many times, teachers forget it isn’t just about teaching children how to read and write, but letting them be kids. This project gives them the interaction of being a kid but learning at the same time by doing something they love. Kids love to perform and dress up in front of classmates and parents and put on puppet shows. This is how children learn and learn how to imagine. Where would we be if inventors didn’t imagine the impossible? Students need to come back to this point and just be kids and learn that being creative in their own way is important.
