This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My goal is always to remove all Math fears and replace them with the feeling that Math is a lot of fun. My project needs 4 copies of blank books for each student (1 per student per quarter) for them to create Math Puzzles (AKA Word Problems, which many kids hate).
By having the students create their own Puzzles, which they share with each other and try to solve each other's puzzle, the students get excited about the process and realize that there is nothing to fear about Math Word Problems (which is the standard way to test knowledge/ability of Math skills).
I have done this project in a Summer Math Camp and it was an incredible success. The students were very proud of their creations and enjoyed explaining the various puzzles and how to solve them.
I would very much like to be able to do it again with my own 5th grade students, and have them witness the growth that will take place throughout the year. I want to prepare my students to enter Middle School with the confidence that they CAN tackle any Math that may come their way, and do so with excitement and happy anticipation.
