I currently teach a self contained K-2 class of students with high functioning autism. We do not eat in the cafeteria during lunch time because the noise can be overwhelming for some of my students. Instead, we share lunch in our classroom. Since I teach at a Title 1 school, some of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Due to this, some of their background knowledge of how to properly handle oneself in a restaurant is somewhat limited. I want to be able to teach them how to properly behave in a restaurant and how to use our manners. This project serves a several purposes because it is gives them a real world simulation yet it also encourages them to self monitor their behavior, promotes peer interaction, and teaches good manners. My students can sometimes struggle with their peer interactions so it is my hope that my students will start to interact with one another on a more personal level. I believe that by using items found in a restaurant to create our own "restaurant" setting it will allow my students a glimpse into enjoying their food (even if it is cafeteria food) and the setting around them.
