In first grade, students begin to learn some independence. Choice is a powerful part of independence and allows students to take ownership of their own learning. Right now in my classroom, students may choose to sit in a variety of spots around the room during literacy or math workshop to help them be more engaged learners (in chairs, stools, on the floor with a clipboard, small tables). Flexible seating will give my students more opportunities to choose the best way for them to learn. If children are comfortable, they will be more focused and engaged in their learning. The wobble chairs, wobble cushions, and balance ball seats will help students get their wiggles out, but not distract others. The floor seats will give students a comfy place to sit and work with a clipboard. All the flexible seating can be easily moved around the classroom to be utilized by students independently, in small groups, or in whole group areas to meet all my students' learning needs. My goal is to create an inviting classroom that will allow all students to reach their maximum learning potential.
