Students in third grade learn about overcoming obstacles to education near and far within their Language Arts curriculum. First, I will read, "My Librarian is a Camel" by Margriet Ruurs, an engaging story about how books are brought to children around the world. Students will learn first why someone would go through so much trouble in using a camel, wheelbarrow, or even a boat to bring books to children near and far. As one librarian in Azerbaijan says, "Books are as important to us as air or water!" Students will then design a container that Dash will use to carry at least two books through "rough terrain" on a mat that has mountains, valleys, and even water to children. After having designed their container students will then code their robot to go through the "rough terrain." Through creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking successful Dash robots will deliver their books through the "rough terrain" to children. As the school media specialist this will be the first of many Dash projects that I will work on with students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade to complete. Some examples of future projects are: program Dash to travel through the community and get to school, program Dash to navigate a journey through the Underground Railroad, program Dash to stop at different stages of an animal's life cycle, program Dash to reenact the events of the American Revolution, program Dash to be a character in a story and navigate through the story events, and so much more!
