My students live in the third most dangerous city in the United States. They are the sweetest, most beautiful children you would ever want to meet. They live so isolated in their poverty, that I try my best to expose them to new ways of learning. I am trying to get them so see the world differently through literature, and instill in them a love of reading. Many of my students do not have books at home, and if they do, they are not appropriate for their age level. They spend an amazing amount of time in front of the television, not reading. I want them to feel that picking up a book can be an escape from real life, and a safe place to enjoy themselves. Life for my students can be rough at times, I want them to see through the novels, that there are other options for their futures.
