My students need an updated library to sustain their interest in reading. My classroom library contains donated books that have seen better days. The majority of my library consists of books that have been passed down from teacher to teacher, many are not appropriate for my students' reading level. I think today's children's books engage kids into reading better than the books of the past. Many students are familiar and interested in the Geronimo Stilton books, a series I was unfamiliar with until last year. I understand why students want to read these books: the vibrant words draw readers in just as much as the pictures! Through word art, students can better understand character tone and emotion. The "Fly Guy" series also engages readers in a similar way through decorated font. With pristine, white pages and colorful text decorating every page, I can see why students do not want to read 20-year-old books with outdated covers. In this critical reading age, students need to find books that interest them; not forced to read books considered classic to the youth of the past.
