I teach 7th grade ELA. This year I hope to use picture books to build a strong, welcoming classroom community. Books that will expose them to diverse stories and address a variety of topics, such as bullying and acceptance. These books will also address standards and model fluency. It will enhance their listening skills. Students will be able to have a better understanding of theme, symbolism, and figurative language. Students will have multiple opportunities to use text evidence and support claims. I believe, most importantly, my students will have time to relax, enjoy class and be reminded of their love of being read to as a child. I want to create an atmosphere of reading for joy.
