In July 2018 a Law was passed that all Elementary Schools required a Guidance Counselor whose primary job was the Mental Health of our students, staff and school. As a guidance counselor I facilitate small groups, individual counseling, crisis intervention and threat assessments within my school. I teach our students different tools to cope, develop coping skills, address trauma and provide a SAFE space for them. According to EveryTown, there have been 17 school shootings in 2018 alone, and 290 since 2013!! I have two projects I am asking for support in. This is all combined into this 1 request. 1- I would like to create "safety tool boxes". This would include a flash light, stress relief resources and things to occupy our students in the case of an active shooter on campus. Students hide in their "safe zones" for hours at a time, and I want to be able to provide a sense of peace while they are in their "safe zone" IF we were to experience such an event. 2- This upcoming 2019-2020 year I will have a full classroom to be able to facilitate bigger therapy groups, meditation groups and overall create a safer place to accommodate more of our students. Help me create this space. A space where students can learn about their feeling and emotions and how to navigate them while being at school. Help me keep our students safe and help me teach them tools they can use for the future. Remember, if a child comes to school with life situations and stressors, you will not be able to teach that student.
