Many students have played soprano recorders in elementary school, because they are a good vehicle for learning basic woodwind fingering. However, the recorder has a rich and diverse tradition in European music tradition. We need recorders (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) to help students experience classical and world music and learn about harmonies. We'll be using Orff-Schulwerk methodology to learn and perform music and dance from Bulgaria, Western Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, Ireland, the Caribbean, South and Central America, the United States (including jazz and other African-American traditions). Our music program is new this year, and we've been acquiring guitars, ukuleles, tuners, capos, and percussion instruments. Our school ran into an unexpected budget crisis before we could purchase all the instruments needed for this new class. We've borrowed a class set of soprano recorders from a local elementary school for the spring, and we are fortunate enough to be able to borrow some Orff instruments from a local professional organization. Now we just need some lower range recorders to round out the instrumentarium! Thank you for your support!
