I teach first grade in a high poverty area in a very rural part of the South. We are a Title 1 school so many of my students lack basic essentials such as books, school materials and background knowledge that could enhance their learning. Yet, every day they come to school eager to learn and succeed. Please help my students have a successful first grade year. First grade is a critical year where students need to successfully master the basics of phonics, word building and word recognition. First grade helps to lay the foundation that builds into a student's reading ability, comprehension and overall love of reading.
