Students will be highly motivated to embark on this graphic design journey. First, students will seek out the best and the worst of modern skateboard designs. We will begin with the Andy Warhol skateboard designs. We will focus on the bold colors and repetitive design. Students will discuss which designs are appealing and why other designs were unappealing. Students will be challenged to take advantage of the horizontal and vertical axis for their designs and to have at least two designs focused on the elements of pattern, shape and color rather than depending on typographic solutions. Students need to utilize their own drawing styles versus trying to imitate existing art. We need acrylic paints, sketchpads, foam board, construction paper, newsprint and drawing pencils to create their skateboard designs. After sketches are approved, the designs will be transferred to cover stock. Most students will be able to easily enlarge their design. Students experiencing difficulty will be able to utilize an overhead projector to project their design. The foam core will give each work the depth of plywood construction, plus it is easy to work with. High school students will recognize the importance of popular culture on contemporary design. They will also recognize the contribution of graphic designers to successful name brand campaigns. Finally, students will create original skateboard designs using their own personal vision.
