The students LOVE to play instruments. When the students are playing rhythm patterns from flashcards or from a score, they are tracking left to right, just as they do when reading words. If the classroom has enough tubano drums for half the class, the students can rotate and have an opportunity to play the rhythms as written, or sometimes improvising their own. So many of my students live in stressful environments - some have parents who are incarcerated or have died. Others are considered homeless, living in hotels or shuffled around among relatives. Studies indicate that drumming eases anxiety and releases tension. Another benefit of drumming is that by using 2 hands to play, both sides of the students' brains will be activated.
