Expressing ideas clearly in English can be challenging for English language learners, but digital storytelling will enhance their communication skills by using apps that offer pictures and modules that encourage thinking and ideas for writing. Students at every level of English proficiency will benefit from the use and integration of using writing apps on iPad's in the classroom. These skills will engage students in deep, meaningful learning and prepare them for the skills needed to advance in English language proficiency. Providing students with opportunities for digital literacy in the ESL classroom will spark an interest in writing that isn't present when writing with paper and pencil. Our first project using digital literacy will be an informative essay about home countries. I plan on using clips and photos of relatives still in home countries or relatives that are in the U.S. to bring culture into our school community, while giving ELL students an outlet to share their background in a welcoming way. Students will develop all four modalities: listening, speaking, reading and writing skills simultaneously through digital storytelling in an exciting, authentic way. Digital storytelling projects will bridge the divide between community, school, and parents by allowing the sharing of the storytelling projects.
