My children love getting hands-on experience with science. Their homerooms study mixtures and solutions and the beakers, tweezers, stir rods, hot plate, and chemicals will give them an opportunity to conduct a live experiment as an extension to their homeroom study giving them an opportunity to work with real life mixtures and solutions. With these project materials, we will make "gold" pennies just like medieval alchemists! We are just finishing up the classic novel Treasure Island in our gifted reading course and with these specific materials, my alchemists will experiment with making "gold." They will plate pennies/copper with the zinc in this project which, when melted together will make the gold colored alloy, brass. This is such an exciting way to extend literature trough science! This project meets my students need of seeing their future selves changing the world. As an introductory chemistry experiment, these alchemists will become modern chemists and see themselves studying science as a career path.
