Our young kids come to school every day from communities of trauma. They do their very best to come ready to learn in their classrooms, since it's one of the few places many of them feel safe. However, they need our help to reach their academic and behavioral goals. Imagine a room of social-emotional education and wellness. Replacing what has been our room for detention, we are working towards a climate of understanding that these youth are doing their best to respond to an unreasonable, unforgiving environment. We are creating an oasis for young minds in a turbulent storm, a cove in rocky seas. In our room, children will have the opportunity for private break space, individual and group counseling, learning how to solve conflicts, mindfulness practices, and interactive positive social environment. Yoga mats will be used for mindfulness groups; the stress toys and fidgets used for those with extra energy. The headphones will accompany iPads and tablets pre-loaded with mindfulness and emotional education games. The timers will be used for monitoring their own time spent in the room. There are also various office supplies, needed for general use in group activities and within individual counseling sessions.
